Written in response to a short residency I once had in a well known city venue. It had the potential to be quite soul destroying, but thankfully, after four weeks the owners didn't ask me back! At least I got this song out of it, so the experience wasn't totally wasted.
At the time, I also started writing a song which began:
This is a song for the drunk at the bar,
Who wants me to sing and play my guitar…
The sad thing is, the drunk at the bar was a woman in her thirties, who would come in straight after work, sit in 'her seat' at the bar, and slowly but steadily get well and truly drunk.
You can pretty much guarantee that at least one inebriate is going to ask for ‘American Pie’, or some other classic song that is not in your repertoire at these venues. And even if you do know the song requested, the wise thing to do is pretend you don’t, because as soon as you start singing, some well lubricated junior office clerk is bound to join in — off key, and with the wrong lyrics!
Some people want to remember,
Some people want to forget.
Everyone wants to be happy they say,
But we’re not even close to that yet.
Some people just want to listen
Some people just want to sin.
The man at the front wants, ‘American Pie’,
And he’s getting under my skin.
CHORUS
Some people think it is easy,
To stand on a stage under lights,
Trying to break through the boredom,
Turning the day into night.
Trying to make a connection,
Following every sign,
Hoping the songs they remember tonight,
The moment I finish are mine.
Some people think they are better,
Some people know they are worse.
But that won’t stop them singing off key,
Or singing the wrong bloody verse.
Some people say, Let’s go home, for God’s sake!
Some people say, Let’s join in.
The man at the front shouts, ‘American Pie’,
And I’m getting tired of him.

First saw Mark via a live stream from Club Passim, and was immediately hooked by his songs and his honesty, so much so that I bought this album myself. Jim Lesses
I've been following Nora Brown since first hearing her perform as a 10 or 11 year old at the Floyd Country Store. Now approaching her late teens Nora just gets better and better. Jim Lesses
I first heard this duo performing via a Club Passim live stream, and immediately loved their inventive melodies and especially Yasmine Shelton's expressive singing. Jim Lesses
